Day 2 of the ECOSOC Youth Forum is going on strong!

This morning, there were breakout sessions on key regional priorities for youth development which addressed development needs that are specific to regional contexts and which considered how best to articulate action in support of global objectives.

In the afternoon, the topic was about youth engagement in eradicating poverty and promoting prosperity. It featured initiatives taken by youth that drove social change and which inspired members of society.

Starting NOW:
Interactive Roundtable on Means of Implementation and Financing for Youth Development, featuring Ministers and other High-Level speakers.
This roundtable will address the financial and other means that are needed to implement the 2030 Agenda with a view to contribute to youth development and reach the goals and targets contained therein.

President of ECOSCOC, Frederick Musiiwa Makamure Shava welcomed the youth and participants: "We must invest in young people's education and skills-trainig to unleash their creativity and innovation."

Secretary General António Guterres´s video message to the partipants: "Just by being here, you show you care about the issues... This Forum is interactive. We want to hear from you. Tell us how the United Nations can see the world from your perspective- and answer your concerns."

The proportion of women graduating in the fields of science and engineering remain low in poor and rich countries alike. Women are more likely to graduate in the fields related to education, health and welfare, and humanities and the arts (http://bit.ly/1M2sr9t).

The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme

Today, January 27th, is the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

 

You can find out more by reading a study guide for students aged 13 and up that serves

 as a companion to the new animated documentary film entitled, 

“The Last Flight of Petr Ginz”, on the life and artwork of Petr Ginz, a Jewish boy from 

Prague who perished in the Holocaust at the age of 16.

Petr’s writings and artwork can give us insight into the experience of one Jewish teenager and how he dealt with the circumstances he found himself in during World War II. Through Petr's story, we can learn the importance of standing up against hate and prejudice. The study guide was produced by the The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme

Have you ever wondered where youth issues are discussed at the United Nations? One place where Member-States discuss them is at the Commission for Social Development.

The fifty-fifth session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD55) will take place one week from now at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 1 to 10 February 2017. The priority theme for the 2017-2018 review and policy cycle would be “Strategies for the eradication of poverty to achieve sustainable development for all”.

The Youth4Peace Portal is a multi-stakeholder partnership launched last year between the United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, the UN Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), Search for Common Ground (SfCG) and the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY), working together through the IANYD Working Group on Youth & Peacebuilding.
It supports the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which is the first international policy framework that recognizes the positive role young people play in preventing and resolving conflict, countering violent extremism and building peace. By creating a profile, the portal aims to provide young people with an interactive experience by not only having access to the latest news, events, and key resources for young people to participate in peacebuilding, but also take part in online consultations, share ideas, collaborate on common projects and much more!

The youth-friendly version of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has been launched by UN Women! CEDAW for Youth was written by a young woman (Pooja Khanna) and a young man (Zachary Kimmel).

CEDAW is an international legal instrument that requires countries to eliminate discrimination against women in all areas and promotes women’s equal rights. CEDAW is often described as the international bill of rights for women.
